Two of the species of Hammerhead Shark, the great scalloped hammerhead, are at risk of extinction. While these fascinating fish are known to create a sense of terror in the coastal areas, it is actually us humans that are a more significant threat to their existence.
Famous marine conservationist and diver turned underwater photographer Jason Borkland is making considerable efforts to create awareness of this unique-looking creature and the risk of its extinction.
Not many people can experience the underwater world as closely as he can. According to Jason, swimming alongside beautiful and peaceful Scalloped Hammerheads has been a truly life-changing experience for him. And he feels fortunate to have seen it all with his naked eye, as that has led him to his ultimate passion in life.
“Priceless! This beautiful and iconic species is amazing to dive with. The look they give you when you are on the outside… the look of “what is this crazy fish that blows bubbles doing?”The look when they decide you are okay and can tag along!”
While many would be scared to have these creatures swimming alongside him, the PADI-certified diver thinks differently. In fact, his underwater experience changed his view, and he could not help but fall in love with Hammerheads. And as human instinct goes, we protect what we love!
Jason is an established content creator who uses his Instagram @Jasonborkland, to create awareness around wildlife and its protection. He ensures that his voice reaches ordinary people, unaware of the underwater world’s beauties and the risks they face due to our kind.
Sharks are losing their habitat, and overfishing has caused them to fall under the endangered species. The apex predator is exceptionally vital to the marine ecosystem, which is why they are commonly referred to as ‘Ecological Engineer.’ Sharks are responsible for the diversity of species. If these fantastic creatures go extinct, the underwater world will cease to remain as diverse and colorful as it has always been.
Jason participates in fundraising activities and joins different non-profits to support the cause, saving sharks and promoting healthy oceans. He urges people to enjoy these majestic beings but be mindful of the fact that these species are endangered. He has also provided his technical diving skills to various scientific organizations researching and conserving marine life.
Jason says about his shark conservation goals, “I truly wish with all my heart that everyone could have the experience to be underwater with these gentle and shy “giants.” They are truly a special species of shark.”
Through his tremendous efforts and skills, Jason is making sure to contribute to the debate on Hammerhead Shark extinction. To learn more about Jason Borkland’s work and adventures above and below the ground, check out his website here.
