Fish and seafood prices showed a strong rise during August

The inflation in August, which reached 4.53% nationally, was strongly driven by price increases in foods like chicken and fish, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI).

In the case of chicken, the price rose 4%, still affected by the rise in corn prices and the exchange rate. Currently in the retail markets the sale price of chicken exceeds S / 9.

During the last month the price of various varieties of fish also rose , a food that in some cases is used as a substitute for poultry.

The fish and seafood prices rose at 7.82% nationally, becoming the second food group with the highest price hike in August, just behind the oils and fats which increased by 8.05%.

However, the increase in fish sales prices was not due to international factors or the dollar, but to a lower catch of the main species for human consumption.

Given this, the INEI indicates that the prices of bonito rose by 17.3%, horse mackerel by 17%, mullet by 15%, cashme at 10.4%, mackerel by 9.6%, tollo by 8%, trout by 5.1% , the parakeet at 4.9%, and the cojinova at 3.7%

Only in Metropolitan Lima were some prices even higher. The yellowtail was the one who had the biggest increase in price in the capital, rising 21.9% in the capital, while the pretty rose is 18% and 15.3% smooth.

According to the Central Reserve Bank (BCR) , the rise in prices in Lima is explained by the anomalous waves and the decrease in sea temperature in winter, which dispersed the species and made fishing difficult.
